Closets can start to feel overwhelming quickly, especially when two people share the same space. Between clothing, shoes, shelves, accessories, and everyday items, it doesn’t take much for things to start feeling cluttered or difficult to maintain.
For this New Orleans closet organization project, our team at Professional Organizer New Orleans helped transform a shared closet into a space that felt cleaner, more functional, and easier to maintain day to day.
While the closet was shared by both spouses, her side needed the most attention, so that’s where our team started.
Here’s a look at the closet before the organizing session:

Starting With a Game Plan
This was a two-organizer session, which allowed our team to divide and conquer the space more efficiently. Our organizing sessions typically last around 5 hours, during which we work to help clients make as much progress as possible. For this particular closet project, it turned out to be the perfect amount of time to fully reset and organize the space.
One of our team members focused on organizing the shelves first. Everything was taken down and placed on the bed to make it easier to create categories and review items.
At the same time, the other team member started wiping down the shelves and cleaning them so they would be fresh and ready once everything was organized and returned to its place.
This really helps with closet organization projects because taking everything out first gives us a chance to fully reorganize the space from a fresh starting point.
Sorting, Categorizing & Creating Better Systems
Once the shelves were cleared, we started going through the clothing and other items, section by section, to figure out what made the most sense for the space and how the closet was being used day to day.
After everything was sorted, we put items back in a way that felt more organized and easier to keep up with moving forward. Similar items were grouped together so things would be easier to find and less likely to pile back up over time.
We also added bins and labels throughout parts of the closet to help keep smaller items more organized and contained.
Upgrading the Hangers
One thing our client wanted to improve was the look and feel of the hanging clothing section.
Before the session, the closet had a mix of different plastic hangers. To create a cleaner, more cohesive look, we switched everything to matching black velvet hangers.
Not only did this instantly make the closet feel more put-together visually, but velvet hangers also help keep clothing in place and create a more streamlined look overall.
Once the new hangers were added, all hanging clothing was reorganized, sorted, and grouped together more neatly.
Organizing the Shoes & Shelving
After the hanging clothes were completed, we moved on to the shoe shelves.
We removed the shoes, cleaned the shelving, and reorganized everything back into place in a cleaner, more functional way.
Like with the clothing, the goal wasn’t just to make things look organized for the day. The goal was to create systems that would feel easier to maintain moving forward.
Organizing the Husband’s Side
Once our client’s side of the closet was completed, we shifted our attention to her husband’s side.
We organized his hanging clothing, drawers, and shelving so everything was grouped with like items and easier to find.
By the end of the session, everything had a home, items were off the floor, and the closet felt significantly cleaner, lighter, and more functional overall.

The Finished Closet
One of the biggest things people notice after a closet organization project is how much better the space feels to walk into every day.
When clothing, shoes, and everyday items all have a place, it becomes much easier to maintain the space and keep things from piling back up again.
