If you’ve been thinking about getting help with decluttering, one of the biggest questions many people ask us is: What’s included in your decluttering services, and how does it work?
Decluttering isn’t just about cleaning up or putting things away. It’s a hands-on process that involves going through what you own, making decisions, and resetting your space so it’s easier to live in day to day.
But first, before people ask what’s included, many people don’t even know what a professional decluttering service is or that it even exists. So, we’re going to break that down.
What’s a Professional Decluttering Service?
A professional decluttering service is a hands-on service where professional organizers help you sort through the belongings in your home.
Together, you’ll decide what to keep, donate, recycle, or throw away based on your goals.
The purpose is to help you let go of items you no longer want or need, reclaim valuable space, and create a home that’s easier to use and maintain.
Who is a Professional Decluttering Service for?
A professional decluttering service is for anyone who feels like clutter is getting in the way of enjoying their home.
Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, preparing for a move, downsizing, or simply ready to part with things you no longer use, a professional organizer can provide the guidance, support, and accountability to help you make steady progress.
People from all walks of life hire professional decluttering services, including busy families, working professionals, seniors, parents, and individuals with ADHD.
No matter your situation, the goal is the same: to help you create a home that feels more functional, less cluttered, and easier to manage.
What Areas Can a Professional Decluttering Service Help With?
A professional decluttering service can help with pretty much any area of your home, whether it’s a closet, kitchen, garage, bedroom, pantry, or another space.
Ultimately, it comes down to what you’re looking for help with, what your top priorities are, which items or areas you want help going through, and how much support you need.
Everyone’s home and situation are completely different, so the areas people hire a professional organizer to help declutter will vary from one person to the next.
How Our Professional Decluttering Process Works
At Professional Organizer New Orleans, before we even get started, we’ve already taken a look at your project and put together a plan based on your space. We’ve also talked through your goals and what you’re looking for help with, so we can make the most out of the time we have together.
A typical decluttering session is up to about 5 hours, and during that time, we focus on helping you get as much done as possible while staying organized and intentional with the process.
That said, how much progress is made in each session can look different for everyone. Some projects move quickly, especially when decisions feel more straightforward. Others take a bit more time, particularly when there’s more to sort through or when items feel more personal.
There’s never any pressure to rush. We’re there to move at your pace, or help you move a little faster if that’s what you’re looking for.

What to Expect During a Decluttering Session
1. A Hands-On, Guided Process
Every project is a little different, but most decluttering sessions start with working through your space together.
For smaller areas or lighter projects, this might look like working one-on-one with a single organizer. For larger or more involved projects, you may have multiple organizers working alongside you to move things along more efficiently.
Our goal isn’t to rush you. It’s to help you move through decisions with support, so things don’t get stuck or overwhelming. If you want to see how this works for your specific space, you can learn more about our decluttering services.
2. Help Deciding What to Keep, Toss, or Donate
One of the biggest parts of decluttering is decision-making. It’s not always as simple as just getting rid of things. A lot of items have some level of attachment, or you may feel unsure about whether you’ll need something later. That’s where having someone there can really help.
We work alongside you to:
- Sort through items
- Talk through what you actually use and need
- Help you feel more confident in what you’re ready to part with
You’re always in control of what stays and what goes. Nothing is removed without your approval. Our role is to guide you through the process, not make decisions for you.
Having that support can really help, especially as decisions start to add up. It helps the process feel more manageable and keeps things moving without feeling overwhelming.
3. Physical Help Getting Everything Done
Decluttering isn’t just mental; it’s also physical.
Many people don’t realize how much time and energy go into actually decluttering a space. Between pulling everything out, sorting, making decisions, and then putting things back, it can be a lot to handle on your own.
We help with:
- Pulling everything out of spaces so you can clearly see what you have
- Sorting items into categories to make decisions easier
- Bagging up donations and trash as you go
- Moving items where they need to go so everything gets reset properly
Having help with the physical side is what keeps things moving.
Instead of stopping halfway through because it’s too much to manage, you’re able to stay focused on decisions while everything else is being handled alongside you. This is what helps projects actually get finished, while keeping the process manageable from start to finish.

4. Donation & Removal Support
Once you’ve decided what you’re ready to part with, we help take it from there.
One thing we’ve found working with many clients is that one of the hardest parts isn’t just deciding what to let go of, it’s actually parting with the items once that decision is made. It’s completely normal to feel a little hesitation, especially when things have been in your home for a long time.
Another challenge we hear often is simply finding the time to deal with everything after it’s been sorted. Donation items can end up sitting in the back of your car, in boxes by the front door, or in a pile off to the side with the intention of “getting to it later.” And sometimes, when they sit there long enough, those items slowly start to make their way back into your space.
That’s where having support during this step can make a big difference. It helps you follow through on the decisions you’ve already made without second-guessing or having things linger longer than you intended.
Depending on the project, items are typically:
- Donated
- Thrown away
- Recycled
We assist with bagging and removing donation items as you go, so you’re not left figuring out what to do with everything afterward. This keeps the process moving and helps your space feel lighter right away, instead of things sticking around after you’ve already decided to let them go. 5. Organizing After Decluttering (Optional but Common)
Decluttering is one part of the process. Many clients also want help setting things back up in a way that actually works long-term.
Once everything has been decluttered and cleared out, this is where your space can really start to come together and have a fresh start. Instead of just having less, you now have the opportunity to set things up in a way that feels easier to live in day to day.
That can include:
- Putting items away in a logical way
- Creating simple systems that make sense for your routine
- Setting up storage so things are easier to maintain
This step often ends up being what makes everything feel more complete.
Without it, spaces can sometimes feel “in progress,” even after a lot has been removed. With it, things have a clear place, and it’s much easier to keep things consistent moving forward.
It also helps reduce the chances of things building back up over time, because your space is set up in a way that supports your day-to-day habits instead of working against them.
This step isn’t required, but it’s often what helps the space stay consistent after everything is cleared out.

What’s Not Included in Our Professional Decluttering Service
While we help with a wide range of decluttering and organizing projects, there are a few services we don’t provide:
- Large junk or furniture removal. We can take smaller donations that fit in our organizers’ vehicles and are accepted by local donation centers. However, large furniture, appliances, mattresses, and significant amounts of junk or trash should be handled by a junk removal company or furniture donation pickup service.
- Moving and transporting boxes. We can help you pack, unpack, and organize your belongings, but we aren’t a moving company and don’t transport boxes or household items to a new location.
- Moving heavy furniture. For safety reasons, we don’t lift or move large furniture or other heavy items.
- Handyman services. We don’t install shelving or closet systems, hang artwork or mirrors, mount TVs, remove carpet, or perform other handyman work.
- Deep cleaning. While we may wipe down shelves, drawers, or surfaces as we organize, we don’t provide professional deep cleaning services.
Flexible Based on Your Project
Every home and situation is a little different, so the way you approach decluttering can look different, too.
Some clients prefer to tackle all the areas they want to declutter at once so they can make faster progress and get their home reset more quickly. Others prefer to move at a slower pace and break sessions up over a few weeks or months, especially with busy schedules or limited time.
Both approaches work. It really comes down to what feels more manageable for you, and we’re here to support either way. The goal is to find an approach that feels doable and keeps you moving forward without adding extra stress.
How Much Does a Decluttering Service Cost?
Decluttering projects can vary quite a bit depending on your space and what you’re looking for help with.
Things like the size of your home, how much you’re going through, and how many organizers are involved all play a role. A smaller project with one organizer will look very different than a full-home project with a team.
It can also depend on whether you’re looking for help organizing after the decluttering is done. Some clients want support setting everything back up in a way that’s easier to maintain, which can increase the overall investment, but also helps the space feel more complete.
For others, decluttering alone is enough to get things to a good place. It really depends on your space, your goals, and what kind of support you’re looking for. If you’re not sure what your project might look like, that’s completely normal. Most people don’t know until they’ve talked it through or had someone take a look at the space.

Decluttering Doesn’t Have To Feel So Overwhelming
Decluttering can be mentally, physically, and even emotionally exhausting. It doesn’t have to be something you take on all on your own.
Having support, both in the decision-making and the physical work, can make the entire process feel more manageable, less overwhelming, and help you tackle things much faster.
It absolutely does not mean you’re lazy and can’t handle it yourself.
