What to Expect When Hiring an Unpacking & Organizing Service

When you hire an unpacking and organizing service, professional organizers can help unpack boxes, put belongings away, organize each space, break down boxes, and help you get settled into your new home.

Depending on the size of your move, you may hire organizers for a few specific rooms or for your entire home.

Below, we’ll walk you through exactly what to expect before, during, and after an unpacking and organizing service based on how our team handles these projects throughout the New Orleans area.

What Does an Unpacking Service Actually Do?

A professional unpacking service helps you unpack your belongings and get settled after a move. Depending on the company and service you hire, professional organizers may:

  • Unpack boxes
  • Sort belongings by room or category
  • Put items away
  • Organize closets, kitchens, pantries, bathrooms, and other spaces
  • Set up organizing systems
  • Label containers when needed
  • Break down empty boxes
  • Help with decluttering as items are unpacked

At Professional Organizer New Orleans, we don’t just empty your boxes. We organize your belongings as we unpack so your home is functional and organized from the beginning.

How Does the Unpacking & Organizing Process Work?

When you first reach out for unpacking and organizing help, we’ll gather information about your project.

We’ll ask which areas or rooms you want help with, how soon you need help, what area you live in, your budget, and how your belongings were packed.

For example, were your belongings packed neatly and organized into the correct boxes, or were things packed together more randomly?

At Professional Organizer New Orleans, we offer a free phone consultation. We’ll also ask you to send photos of the areas you want help unpacking and organizing.

From there, based on your project, priorities, and budget, we’ll let you know how much we think we can get done and recommend your organizing sessions.

We offer sessions with different numbers of organizers. Sometimes you may have multiple organizers helping you unpack and organize, while other projects may only need one organizer. It depends on your project, budget, and the dates you book.

If you decide to move forward, we’ll schedule your unpacking and organizing session based on your and our availability.

What Areas of the Home Can We Help Unpack and Organize?

We can help you unpack and organize just about any area of your home, including:

It really comes down to what areas of your home you want help with.

And unpacking isn’t the only time you can hire a professional organizer to help with your home. If you’re looking for help getting organized outside of a move, learn more about hiring someone to organize your home.

What Happens on the Day of Your Unpacking & Organizing Session?

On the day of your scheduled session, we arrive on time and ready to get to work.

We typically bring a supply bag with basic organizing supplies, including scissors, trash bags, paper towels, Clorox wipes, Ziploc bags, tape, and our labeler.

Sometimes our clients are home during their session, and sometimes they aren’t. It depends on your schedule and whether you want to be home while we work.

If you’re home, we may start with a quick walkthrough. However, we typically try to gather the information we need and answer any questions in advance so we can get right to work when we arrive.

What Do We Do During the Unpacking & Organizing Process?

We’ll open your boxes, take out your belongings, break down the boxes, and start putting everything away.

As we unpack, we’ll organize your belongings based on where they make sense, how you use the space and items, and how you want the space set up.

We’ll typically ask about your preferences in advance or, if you’re home during the session, ask questions as we work so we can set up the space in a way that works for you.

How Long Are Unpacking & Organizing Sessions?

Our sessions are typically either five or five and a half hours, depending on the project.

During that time, we help you get as much unpacking and organizing done as we can.

How much we can accomplish in a session depends on several factors, including how many areas we’re helping with, how many belongings need to be unpacked and organized, the size of the spaces, and how everything was originally packed.

If your belongings were packed neatly, boxes were labeled, and items were organized together, it can take less time to unpack and put everything away.

If items were simply thrown into boxes or weren’t organized or labeled, it can take longer because we have to sort through everything before putting it away.

The fewer items that need to be unpacked in a room, the faster we can move through the space and into other areas.

Will You Need More Than One Session?

Sometimes we work with clients for multiple sessions, while other clients only need one.

It depends on how much help you want or need with unpacking and organizing your home.

What Happens at the End of the Session?

At the end of your session, we gather our supplies, clean up, and make sure everything we’ve worked on is put away and looks neat.

We’ll also ask what you want to do with your packing trash. We can help move it to your trash area, and sometimes we can take small and medium-sized boxes with us because we reuse them for decluttering projects.

What Can You Expect From Our Team?

When you hire Professional Organizer New Orleans for unpacking and organizing help, you can expect our team to arrive on time, prepared, and smiling.

We take a friendly, nonjudgmental approach to every project. It is completely okay if your space is messy or disorganized. We don’t mind. We’re there to help, not to judge.

Do You Need to Be Home During the Unpacking and Organizing Service?

No. You don’t need to be home while we unpack and organize your home. You’re welcome to be there if you want, but it’s completely up to you.

We’ll typically ask any questions we need and learn about your preferences ahead of time so our organizers have the information they need to get to work.

The main time we may need you to be home is if you also want help decluttering while we unpack. Some clients didn’t have the time or opportunity to declutter before their move and realize they brought belongings with them that they no longer want or need.

In that case, as we unpack your belongings, we can help you sort through them and decide what to keep, toss, or donate. We can then take your donated items to a local donation center.

This can be especially helpful if you’re downsizing, helping a senior downsize or declutter, or simply want to start fresh in your new home with fewer belongings.

Otherwise, our goal with unpacking and organizing services is to handle as much of the process as possible.

We handle the physical work and much of the organizing so you don’t have to spend your day unpacking boxes and figuring out where everything should go.

What’s the Difference Between Movers and a Professional Unpacking & Organizing Service?

Movers and professional organizers typically play very different roles during a move.

Your movers are primarily responsible for safely transporting your belongings from one home to another. Some moving companies may also offer basic packing or unpacking services.

A professional unpacking and organizing service focuses on what happens once your belongings are inside the new home.

We aren’t simply taking items out of boxes. We’re helping you decide where things should live, grouping similar items together, organizing cabinets and drawers, setting up closets and storage areas, and creating systems that make the home easier to maintain.

If your main goal is getting boxes emptied as quickly as possible, basic unpacking may be enough.

If you want your belongings unpacked and your new home organized, that’s where working with professional organizers can be especially helpful.

How Much Can You Expect Unpacking & Organizing Services to Cost?

Our unpacking and organizing services start around $795, with most clients spending between $795 and $3,000 to $4,000.

Where you fall within that range really depends on your project, how much help you want or need, and your budget. Every client is different. Some clients only want help unpacking and organizing a few specific rooms or areas of their home, while others want help with their entire home.

If you’re looking for whole-home unpacking and organizing help, you can typically expect pricing to start closer to the $4,000 to $5,000 range and go up from there, depending on the size of the project and how much help you need.
