How We Organized a Client’s Pantry in New Orleans: (Before & After)

Sometimes clients reach out because their pantry has simply become hard to manage over time. They’re buying duplicates because they can’t see what they already have, struggling to find ingredients while cooking, or feeling overwhelmed every time they open the pantry door.

For many families, an organized pantry can make daily life feel much easier. Packing lunches becomes faster, cooking feels less stressful, and groceries are easier to keep track of.

This pantry organization project is a real case study from one of our New Orleans clients and gives a behind-the-scenes look at how our team approaches pantry decluttering and organization. Projects like this are a big part of our pantry organization services throughout New Orleans and the surrounding areas.

Before the Pantry Organization Project

Like many pantry projects, this one had a mix of food items, snacks, canned goods, baking supplies, and overflow items that had gradually become difficult to keep organized.

One thing we always explain to clients is that every pantry organization project is different. The amount of time a pantry takes to organize depends on:

  • The size of the pantry
  • The level of disorganization
  • How many items are currently inside
  • Whether clients want help checking expiration dates
  • Whether new organizing products or bins are being added

Some clients have recently gone through expiration dates themselves, while others want us to fully handle that process during the session.

Step 1: Removing Everything From the Pantry

The first thing we do during a pantry organization session is remove everything from the shelves.

This allows us to fully assess what’s inside the pantry and create a clean slate before reorganizing everything.

During this stage, we also check expiration dates if the client wants help with that process. Checking dates can add time to the project because expiration dates are often difficult to locate on packaging, especially when there are a large number of items.

As we go through the pantry, expired food is separated into its own area so clients can decide whether they want us to immediately discard the items or set them aside for review first.

Many clients are surprised by how many expired items have quietly accumulated over time and how much shelf space those items were taking up.

Step 2: Cleaning the Pantry Shelves

Once the pantry is emptied, we wipe down shelves, sweep out crumbs or debris if needed, and clean the overall space before items go back in.

This part of the process helps create a fresh start and also makes it easier to maintain the pantry moving forward.

Step 3: Sorting Food Into Categories

After cleaning, we sort all food and pantry items into categories.

Some common categories include:

  • Snacks
  • Canned goods
  • Pasta and meals
  • Breakfast foods
  • Baking supplies
  • Drinks
  • Kids’ snacks
  • Condiments
  • Grab-and-go items
  • Appliances, lunch boxes, plastic/paper utensils

Sorting items into categories makes everything easier to find and helps clients quickly see what they already have at home.

Step 4: Using Bins and Organizing Products

If clients already have baskets, bins, or organizing products they want to use, we clean those out and reuse them whenever possible.

Some clients also purchase new organizing products in advance or ask us to recommend a few simple solutions to improve functionality.

Our goal is never to create a pantry that only looks good for photos. We focus on creating organizing systems that are realistic, functional, and easy to maintain in daily life.

Step 5: Putting Everything Back in a Way That Makes Sense

Once the categories are complete, we place everything back in the pantry in a way that best fits the client’s routine.

For example:

  • Snacks may be placed lower for children to access easily
  • Frequently used cooking items may stay at eye level
  • Overflow or less-used items may go on higher shelves

Every pantry is customized to the client’s habits and preferences, so the system actually works long term.

Our goal is to make cooking easier, grocery shopping more efficient, and daily routines less stressful while still creating a pantry that feels visually clean and organized.

The Final Result

By the end of this pantry organization session, the client had:

  • Easier access to everyday items
  • Less clutter and expired food taking up space
  • Clear categories for pantry items
  • A pantry that felt easier to maintain moving forward
  • A more functional space for cooking and meal prep

A well-organized pantry is about more than aesthetics. It can genuinely make everyday life feel smoother and less overwhelming.
