Moving to New Orleans can feel exciting, but also overwhelming. Between boxes, busy schedules, and trying to get settled quickly, it’s easy for things to feel a little out of control.
The good news is you don’t need to have everything perfect right away. A few simple steps can help you get organized faster and make your new space feel functional from the start.
1. Focus on the Essential Areas First

When moving to New Orleans, we typically recommend focusing on unpacking and organizing the essential everyday areas first, especially the kitchen, pantry, bedrooms, laundry rooms, and bathrooms.
These are the spaces you’ll rely on immediately for cooking, sleeping, getting ready, and handling your normal daily routines, so getting them functional first can make the entire move feel far less overwhelming.
Once those core living areas are unpacked, organized, and everything has a place, it becomes much easier to slowly work through the less urgent spaces like garages, sheds, attic closets, guest rooms, and extra closets without feeling like your entire home is still in chaos.
Getting these set up first makes your home feel livable quickly, even if everything else isn’t done yet.
2. Try Not To Unpack Everything at Once

One of the most common mistakes people make after moving is trying to unpack the entire house as fast as possible. While it sounds productive, it usually leads to items being shoved into random drawers, cabinets, closets, and storage spaces just to get the boxes out of the way.
This is actually something we hear from clients all the time after moving into a new home in New Orleans. They were exhausted from the move itself and just wanted everything unpacked quickly, so things got placed wherever there was open space at the moment.
The problem is that those temporary systems often turn into permanent ones, and months later, they still can’t find things or feel fully organized in their new home. Humans are remarkably good at adapting to dysfunction if it’s mildly inconvenient instead of catastrophic.
Instead, try to unpack intentionally and focus on one area at a time. Think about how you actually live day to day and where items would realistically make the most sense for your routine. Creating organized systems from the beginning is much easier than having to completely redo the house later once everything has already been scattered around.
Trying to unpack too many rooms at once can also make the process feel far more chaotic. Boxes, loose items, donations, and trash can quickly start mixing together, making the home feel even more overwhelming during a move.
3. Declutter As You Unpack (If You Haven’t Already)

Ideally, decluttering is handled before the move, so you’re not spending time unpacking items you no longer use or want in your new home. If you’ve already decluttered ahead of time, you can focus entirely on getting everything unpacked, organized, and set up.
But realistically, that doesn’t always happen. Between packing, coordinating movers, closing dates, work schedules, and everything else involved in a move, many people simply run out of time. In those cases, it’s very common to declutter as you unpack instead.
As you’re unpacking each box, take a second to ask yourself questions such as:
- Do I actually use this?
- Do I want this in my new space?
- Does my new home have space for this?
If not, set it aside for donation or trash rather than automatically putting it away. Moving can actually be one of the best opportunities to reset your home and avoid filling your new space with things you didn’t really want to bring in the first place.
If you haven’t done that yet, it’s not too late. You can also read our post on “Decluttering Before Moving: What to Keep, Toss, or Donate” for a simple way to work through it.

4. Create Simple Systems You’ll Actually Use

You don’t need complicated organizing systems or a house full of matching bins to get organized after moving. While organizing products can absolutely help in some areas, the most important thing is creating simple systems that work realistically for your daily life.
As you unpack, focus on making your home functional first. Keep everyday items easy to access, group similar items together, and think about what actually makes sense for how you and your family live day to day.
Just because something looks organized doesn’t always mean it works well long-term. If a system feels too complicated, difficult to maintain, or inconvenient to use, chances are it won’t realistically stay that way for very long.
At the end of the day, your home is meant to be lived in, not just look organized for a photo.
Focus on:
- Keeping everyday items easy to access
- Grouping similar items together
- Creating systems that feel realistic to maintain
- Avoiding overcomplicated setups that don’t fit your routine

5. Work Through The House A Little At A Time

Getting fully unpacked and organized usually doesn’t happen in a single day, and that’s completely normal after a move. Instead of trying to finish everything at once, it’s often more manageable to work through the house little by little each day.
Even spending 10 to 30 minutes putting things away, breaking down boxes, or finishing one small area can make a huge difference over time. Even a little consistent progress tends to feel far less overwhelming than trying to tackle the entire house in one weekend.
This also helps prevent:
- Boxes sitting around longer than they need to
- Packing trash and supplies piling up
- Items getting tossed into random places temporarily
- Rooms starting to feel cluttered again before you’ve fully settled in
It doesn’t need to be perfect right away (or ever). The goal is simply to make steady progress so that your new home starts to feel more organized, functional, and comfortable over time.
6. Help Can Make The Process Much Easier
