How to Unpack and Organize After Moving (Like a Pro)

How to Unpack & Organize After Moving

Moving to a new house can be exciting, offering a fresh start in a new space.

However, the sight of countless unpacked boxes can quickly become overwhelming.

But don’t worry.

You can easily manage the unpacking and organizing process with a solid plan and these quick tips.

Here are eight tips to help you unpack and organize your new home faster.

1. Give Yourself Plenty of Time:

Don’t rush the process. It’s essential to give yourself at least a couple of days or more to fully unpack and thoughtfully arrange your items.

Even as professional unpackers and organizers, unpacking and organizing can take multiple days. Remember, creating a comfortable living space takes time.

2. Pre-Plan Your Space:

Plan where everything will go before you start unpacking. Visualizing the layout of your furniture and belongings can make the unpacking process smoother and more efficient.

Use this step to visualize what you have and how you want your space to look and feel.

3. Put Boxes in the Correct Room:

A simple yet crucial step is to label boxes with the room name they belong to before the moving company arrives.

This will save you considerable time and effort, eliminating unnecessary trips across your new home with items that belong elsewhere.

4. Set Up a System for Discarding Packing Materials:

As you start unpacking, you’ll accumulate a lot of waste material. Set up a system to manage the boxes, bubble wrap, and packing paper early on.

We like to use large black contractor bags for the overflow of packing items used.

5. Start With the Necessities:

Begin unpacking with the essential items you’ll need immediately, like toilet paper, a shower curtain for the bathrooms, a coffee maker for the kitchen, and bedding for each bedroom.

This will quickly make your new space functional and livable.

6. Finish the Kitchen First:

The kitchen is the heart of the home but also one of the more challenging areas to unpack. From carefully unpacking glassware to appliances, the kitchen typically takes the longest.

Setting it up first will make the space feel more complete and provide a functional area for meals as your family unpacks the rest of the house.

7. Take One Room at a Time:

Instead of hopping from one room to another, concentrate on unpacking one room at a time.

This might be your bedroom, dining room, game room, craft room, guest bedroom, or kids’ rooms.

This approach makes the process less overwhelming, and you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment as you get each room completely unpacked.

8. Consider Hiring Professional Help:

If unpacking becomes too overwhelming, remember there’s no shame in hiring professional unpacking and organizing help.

A professional organizer or unpacker can provide expertise and efficiency, helping you and your family members settle into your new home more quickly.

Before You Go

Remember to enjoy the process as you unpack and organize your new house.

Every box you unpack is a step towards turning your house into a home that reflects you and your family.

So, take your time, follow these eight tips, and let the journey of creating your new home be a rewarding experience that the family can get involved in.
