There’s nothing worse than opening your closet every morning and immediately feeling stressed out before your day even starts.
For this client, her closet had reached the point where it just wasn’t working for her anymore. She was wasting time searching for things, struggling to find outfits, and holding onto clothes and shoes she no longer wore or needed. Over time, her closet had become a little too full, with hangers packed closely together, clothing harder to see and access, and even the closet door harder to close.
More than anything, her closet just felt overwhelming to her.
So she reached out to Professional Organizer New Orleans for help with decluttering and organizing her closet so she could finally have a fresh start.
Here’s What the Closet Looked Like Before:

How Our Closet Decluttering Process Works
As part of our decluttering services, we guide clients through the closet one section at a time using a simple keep, toss, donate approach.
We bring donation boxes and trash bags with us to help make the process easier and more organized from the start. Then we work side-by-side with our client to sort through clothing, shoes, accessories, and other items to decide:
- What they want to keep
- What should be donated
- What should be thrown away
- What belongs somewhere else in the home
Some clients want to go through every single item in the closet, while others only want help with certain areas. We fully customize the process to what feels comfortable for them.
For this project, we worked one-on-one with the client and one of our organizers. Most closet projects are either:
- One organizer working with the client
- Or two organizers working together with the client for larger closets or heavier decluttering projects
Usually, the number of items in the closet and how much a client plans to part with helps determine how many organizers we recommend.
During our free phone consultation, clients send photos of their space directly to Olivia Parks, who helps recommend the best plan based on the size of the project, goals, and budget.

So, How Long Does Decluttering a Closet Take?
The honest answer is: every closet is completely different.
The time depends on things like:
- The size of the closet
- How much the client wants to go through
- The level of clutter or disorganization
- How quickly decisions can be made
- Whether items need to be reorganized first before decluttering starts
Sometimes closets are so packed that we have to straighten things up a bit before we can actually start sorting through everything properly.
We also always remind our clients there’s no pressure or rush during the process. Our role is to guide, support, provide advice, and make the entire project feel less overwhelming and more manageable.
Many clients are surprised by how much easier it feels having someone there to physically help and keep the process moving forward.

Once the Decluttering Is Done, Most Clients Also Want Help Organizing their Closet
Once we finish the decluttering portion, that’s usually when the organizing side begins.
The majority of our clients who hire us for decluttering also want help organizing and straightening up the space afterward, whether it’s a closet, pantry, bedroom, garage, or another area of the home. After spending time going through everything and letting go of what no longer belongs, most people want help putting everything back in a way that feels functional, organized, and easier to maintain moving forward.
For this closet, we:
- Sorted everything by category
- Organized clothing, shoes, bags, and accessories
- Folded and arranged clothing on shelves and in drawers
- Straightened hanging sections
- Wiped down shelves and closet surfaces where needed
- Created personalized systems designed around how the client actually uses the closet day to day
One thing we always explain is that every closet is different. The way we organize one client’s closet may look completely different from another’s because we personalize systems to their lifestyle, routines, habits, and what’s realistically easiest for them to maintain long term.
Our goal is never just to make a closet look nice for one day. We want everything to have a place and feel easier to keep up with, even after we leave.
